1/ 20 /2005 - Kuumba was recognized by the Roanoke Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) during its 11^th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Banquet. Additional honorees included: Dr. Nathaniel Bishop, Vice President of Administration at Carilion Community Hospital;  Thomas Garland of Econo Drug Store; Community Affairs Worker , Rev. William Lee*; Assistant City Manager Rolanda Russell*, CHIP; and The Rescue Mission.

Friday, February 3, 2006 was Give Kids A Smile® Day (GKAS):

The Give Kids A Smile® name was first used by the Greater St. Louis Dental Society and a group of dentists who set up a temporary full-service clinic that treated nearly 400 children over two days in February 2002.

Since then the program has grown enormously, and in 2005 resulted in treatment of hundreds of thousands of children. Events took place at approximately 1,800 locations across the nation, with some 29,000 dental team volunteers, including almost 11,000 dentists, providing free services to underserved children.
